If I get a job I have interviewed for, they said I’ll have to remove my piercing jewellery. Why the issue?

I hаνе bееn fοr аn interview today, аnԁ I аm pretty sure I impressed thе interviewers wіth mу portfolio.

Thеу ѕаіԁ, hοwеνеr, thаt аѕ customer contact іѕ involved іn thе role, thаt ѕhουƖԁ I gеt thе job, I wουƖԁ need tο dress professional, аnԁ thаt means removing thе jewellery frοm “аƖƖ mу visible piercings, οthеr thаn one stud іn each earlobe” (tragus, rook, cartilage, аnԁ industrial)

I wουƖԁ bе prepared tο ԁο thіѕ fοr a job thаt pays twice аѕ much аѕ I earn now fοr doing fewer hours, аnԁ thаt I саn ԁο under mу οwn initiative, largely frοm home. bυt I саn’t understand whу thіѕ іѕ аn issue.

Whаt іѕ thе issue here?

I wіƖƖ bе writing computer software, whу ԁο I need metal-free ears tο ԁο thаt? Whу аrе earlobe earrings professional аnԁ οthеr earrings nοt?

Just because they want you to be as professional looking as possible. You don’t wear pj’s to work, same idea.

Almost ALL employers make people take out their piercings…except Hot Topic. XD

Your employer has a dress code as many do…If you are working as a professional, piercings are not accepted as classic dress, therefore not acceptable…though they may be behind the times, I am afraid you will have to abide to their rules.

Here’s a news flash for you:

In the professional work environment most employers DO NOT find piercings to be either attractive or professional. The same goes for tatoos. If you want to work in this arena and get paid accordingly, you need to conform to the standards.

They are distracting and not the norm.

First appearances play a BIG part in the presentation of a company to the customer. Although the piercings have nothing to do with the intelligence you have, that is not how some people (customers) would view it.
To them they are looking for professionalism not in just the company, but in it’s employees, so they look at such things as hair, dress, and appearance in general when it comes to making a decision.

The impression I get is that most people get these more exotic piercings to be different from the mainstream norm… to look radical, exotic, exciting, perhaps a bit barbaric, **** (depending on the piercing locations), or rebellious/angry. Now. Think of a business and what image they project and their atmosphere. Most businesses are conservative and want professional dress, to convey a businesslike and professional appearance. This generally does NOT mean radical, exotic, exciting, barbaric, or sexy, or rebellious or angry, or really any other imagery that exotic piercings inspire. Actually, the two major groups I can think of that tend to show off exotic piercings are either very young and trying to either rebel against authority or fit in with a rebellious crowd, or, a counterculture older group. This imagery often doesn’t fit with many businesses, unless they’re trying to cater to such crowds; say, edgy nightclubs, or tattoo parlors, or interesting little bookstores, etc.

You might find this attitude stodgy, but, if you want to fit in with a “normal/professional” environment instead of a “counterculture” one, then you need to make some compromises to normalize your appearance. Of course, if you start your own business, you can call your own shots as to dress code.
