Mine was pierced with a ring and a ring is best to start with because it gives the area room to heal and swell up and all that nice stuff. Then a barbell usually looks nice.

I got mine pierced with a 14g Stainless Steel ring, and changed it to a14g Stainless Steel Curved Barbell after a year when it was healed.
I would say the barbell would be easiest to be pierced with, but the choice sometimes is ultimately upto the piercer.
